Just joined this tribe and look forward to reading about your dogs. I just lost my 8 year old Springer Spaniel, Gus, am about to lose my siberian Husky and this has brought back the pain of losing Teddy, my oorang airdale. He was such a love. I rescued him an hour before he was to be put down. I had him for many many years. He used to love riding in the car with me and would use my pants to wipe his face after eating and drinking. My two favorite breeds now are springers and oorangs. Are there any other airedale owners/lovers in the tribe? I'm hoping to get another oorang in the near future. Too soon for a springer but I'll get another of those too in time.

Cheers, Drake

Anyone have experience with the two?

She came around the corner after she had been out of site for about 5 minutes,
with that "look what i got!!!" look on her cute little face.
Then she tossed it in the air and tackled it.
So i had to grab it from her and call the vet and force feed her hydrogen peroxide
to make her vomit. twice. then she went cold and weak,so i rushed her to the emergency animal clinic in rush hour traffic through the city,
and they fed her activated carbon and gave her a vitamin k shot.
she's fine now but i have to give her 2 vitamin k tablets every day for a few months.
the long term effects include liver damage and hemophilia.
so just a reminder to pick up your freaking rat poison !!
esp if you have a rat terrier who is gonna go sniff out where the rats have been, naturally, and of course discover the tasty green toy of death!

This morning on our walk speck lunged at a bicycle while I was cleaning his poo up. He broke away from me and the bike hit him right on. He went around with the wheels about 3 times and it ran over his head. I was screaming, and trying to hold suzyboy back. Speck took off running at full speed. We were about 2 miles from my house on the lake. He took off down the levy and I was running (pitifully) after him. I saw him attack another dog by the flood gates, luckily the owner got him off, then he took off again!! The walkers were all pointing which way he went as I ran by...and by this point I was crying, because I just knew I would find him hit by a car, and I cannot lose 2 dogs in 3 months time!! I ran all the way home. I had left the back gate open when I left for the walk for the cat to come in. As I ran back there a construction worker across the street said "He is dead meat!" There was speck laying on the back porch, bloody and acting like nothing had happened!! He has a bloody lip and it busted all his back toenails down to stubs, but other than that he is fine. Bastard. When I got inside I just busted into tears! I know this will just make him meaner toward bikes. I also cannot believe running full speed like that he found his way home!! There are 2 major intersections and 3 left turns he had to make. Of course we walk it twice a day, but he was frenzied!!

I have tried different dog foods (wet and dry).I've bought the expensive dog food, I've bought the cheap dog food, and just when I think I found one he'll eat, the next week he won't eat it anymore. I've even gone as far as making him some kind of Dog Turkey loaf..and that went over well for a couple months but then he got tired of that too. I feel awful changing it around all the time, but I don't know what else to do to make him eat.

It happened yesterday at a neighborhood park... my dogs had the most embarrassing tantrum (just like a kid in a candy store).

My soft coated wheaten terriers (3 & 5 yrs old) used to go to doggy daycare and the dog park... but now they act like they have never seen another dog in their life! They bark and thrash like their going to kill any other dog they see. One was a show dog and used to be good at ignoring other dogs - not anymore. The other dog has been through obedience - but you can't tell. They both were in agility last fall until it seemed like they were becoming more aggressive with each class.

One of them had what I call a "mysterious booty problem" and had to be on steroids for four months ... but she's been off them for over a month now.

They both are bad about seeing a person while we walk around our neighborhood... so I started taking them downtown - then they are fine around people.

So our walk yesterday lasted about 3 minutes - and it was back to the car... they were just so out-of-hand. I really probably shouldn't walk them together. Anyone else had similar experiences? I just don't know what to do with the female that barks like she's going to kill.

OK, I want to hear stories of the craziest thing your crazy terriers ever did.

My Cairn Bailey definitely had that crazy terrier head. She'd also never been socialized to other dogs, having spent the first 9 years of her life as the only dog in a house of 8 cats. (Not my house--she was 9 when I got her.) This was a bad combo. At first I tried to socialize her (obedience class, doggie day care) but old dog, new tricks, blah blah blah. I spent a lot of time on walks saying "She's wagging her tail now, but it's just a ruse. No really. Stay back. She'll go for the throat." "She has some issues." "No please, she's a little mental."

I kept her out of most of the fights she wanted to get into, except the one with the 70-lb black Lab mix. (He started it, I swear.) B ended up with a fang puncture between her eyes and a pretty deep one on her cheek. At one point her entire head was in the Lab's mouth. I'm not sure if he bit her or if she just charged up in there. Most of the time, I think most of us think of our dogs as part of our human lives, but at that moment, Bailey was totally alien. She was just this snarling ball of muscle and fur. When I dragged her off, she tried for a piece of me until she realized what she was doing.

The emergency vet's observation, as she was digging around with the forceps trying to get all the hair out of the puncture wounds: "Well, they were bred as fighters. They're a little crazy, but they're smart and they have a high pain tolerance. Which comes in handy when you have to do this. A Golden Retriever would be seriously freaking out right now."

Mom says I'm really a terrier in an orange tabby suit. I love to bite, I love to wrassle, I love to jump, I love to pounce and I love to loooove, purrrrr. Plus I follow mom from room to room, trying to help her do her work, even if I get stepped on sometimes because I'm right behind her. So yeah, terriers rule since I'm a terrier on the inside!
